Sustainable approaches to rejuvenate the Handloom and Handicraft in India


Abstract

Handlooms and Handicrafts are one of the important cottage industries in the country giving livelihood to rural India. Several numbers of handlooms in India are engaged in weaving for natural fibers such as cotton, silk, and wool. Most of the villages in India are directly or indirectly dependent on their bread and butter from handloom and handicrafts and also reflects the traditional beauty of India's precious heritage. A case study on the silk handloom sector was done which is practiced in a small village named Bhagaiya in Jharkhand. The objective of the survey was to study every information and lively aspect of the craft status in Bhagaiya, Jharkhand that can bring about the development of the craft and the craftsmen. The focus of the study is to know about the existing supply chain, to gain insight through a diagnostic study into the environment, specific realities, resources and learning the insight of the handloom industry. The current study can help to give a platform to think about the strength, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of the weaver society so that relevant agencies can approach to provide necessary aids by the exact situation so that the status of weaver’s life in India. This paper tries to provide insights into the handloom textile industry and attempts to explain the challenges and opportunities that lie within it. In this paper, cost-effective and eco-friendly technology using natural dyes from identified resources of India has also been discussed for the handloom weavers of India. This paper also features handcraft as one of the potential roads for accomplishing sustainable development. In particular, we have taken craft examples from the colorful region of Kutch and how these crafts are the first step towards the conservation of resources and sustainability.
