Abstract

FAST US (ultrasound) is specifically a ruler scan. The detection of abnormal intra-abdominal free fluid is a finding that can help the diagnosis. The absence of free fluid on US FAST does not mean that there is no free fluid; it simply means that free fluid has not been detected by US FAST. In this circumstance, clinical evaluation or other alternative investigative modalities should be considered. This review describes how to perform a US FAST or extended FAST exam, with examples of common pathologies. Benefits are highlighted, along with limitations and shortcomings.
