Chronic pain syndrome: a new look at etiopathogenesis and treatment

PDF Full Text

Abstract

Chronic pain (primary, idiopathic) is considered to be a multifactorial disease, the trigger of which is unknown. The hypothesis of chronic pain syndrome: in genetically predisposed individuals, prolonged negative factors (chronic stress) cause excessive pupil constriction via cortico-nuclear pathways, which is manifested by significant activation of the parasympathetic nervous system. Constricted pupils (reduced luminous flux) through the optic-vegetative system trigger pathological biochemical processes in the body, which leads to a deterioration in the physical and psychological conditions of patients. It is proposed to introduce into the protocol of treatment of chronic pain syndrome (and all somatic and mental diseases) the medical dilation of the pupils to relieve the negative effects of an overactive parasympathetic nervous system on the body.
