Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) represents a growing global challenge,
driven by physical inactivity and rising obesity—factors that increase the risk
of severe complications and uncontrolled glycemic levels. Although physical
activity is essential for glucose metabolism, patient adherence to exercise
remains low. This study, an integrative review, proposes the stratification of
diabetics into three physical profiles based on the IPAQ and functionality: 1)
physically active; 2) physically inactive with functional capacity; and 3)
physical-functional inactive, represented by individuals with severe
limitations, such as amputees. The analysis highlights that active static
stretching emerges as a viable therapeutic alternative for low-adherence
groups, demonstrating both acute and chronic efficacy in reducing blood glucose
and improving glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c). It is concluded that recognizing
these profiles allows for more precise clinical guidance, utilizing stretching
as a gateway to regular exercise practice.
